A look back at our weekend with Tarifa Salem

In February we were graced with the knowledge and expertise of Tarifa Salem, a second generation Lebanese American dance artist and instructor.

Tarifa is the niece and student of the famous Ibrahim Farrah, famous Lebanese dancer who made a grand impact on Middle Eastern dance in the US and beyond.

She taught classic Raqs Sharqi (bellydance), Lebanese Folkloric Dance, and Zaar Dance. Dancers left the weekend feeling inspired, invigorated, challenged, and informed (not just in the art of dance and creative pursuit, but in the history and traditions of it).

We also had the pleasure of dancing to live drumming, as Karadeniz made the trek to the Triangle area to accompany Tarifa during each workshop.

We are so grateful to have studied with Tarifa and get the live drumming experience! To learn more about Tarifa and to study with her online, visit her website www.tarifasalem.com.

Dancers (and our drummer Karadeniz) pose together after the Zaar Choreography workshop.

Tarifa teaches an aspect of her Raqs Sharqi choreography.

Tarifa gives insight on the stylization of Lebanese Folkloric Dance.
